| Syrinx is a Shearwater 16ft rowing & sailing boat. She was for a long time our demonstrator. Some of these photos are of her, some of Build-a-Boat courses. A very popular BUILD-A-BOAT boat because she is so versatile - a cracking good sailer and very rewarding to row, especially to pair scull - and you can get the hull with centreboard case done in a two week course. The 'set-up' is the long plank on legs secured with brackets to the floor. The frames are bolted to cross pieces (spalls). The spalls are part of the set-up, and are bolted each in its correct place exactly at right angles to the centreline of the set-up plank. For a two week BUILD-A-BOAT COURSE, I have made the frames, stem & stern post in advance. So the first job, after a good look at the plans, is to bevel frames 2 & 4 and the stem & stern post so the planks will lie flat on them. I have the measurements for this on my patterns. (Frame 3 is the one just behind my left hand. The bow is in the background, so the forward 'rang' is the triangular frame visible under frame 3, and frame 2's right hand leg sticks out to the right of frame 3's. Then frame 4 and, right in the foreground, the aft 'rang'.) Then you can set everything up, frames exactly upright, correct side to the station line, all centrelines directly above the centreline on the set-up plank. Put in the requisite bronze screws (no glue yet!) and the next job is the centreboard case. If you arrive on Saturday evening for a Sunday start, you will be at this point on Tuesday evening or Wednesday lunch time. |
