| Sam (15), and his mother Marion, built his Shearwater to sail & row out of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. A close-up of planking. They are working together, fitting each end of the first plank 2. The plank must fit to the stem (stern post for Sam, out of shot) and the garboard. Garboards are the two planks, one each side, next to the keel. You can see the the nearer garboard with the bevel at its edge just under Marion's left hand finger tips. The bevel is the dark stripe along the plank edge where it has been planed at an angle so that the next plank fits flat onto it. The whole planking process can appear quite intimidating when you try to get your head round it from a description. In any case books or magazine articles often leave out vital points, and a complete description takes an age to read, quite apart from wrestling with the arcane technical terms! When the structure is in front of you and I show you what you are aiming at, and the easy way to do it, all becomes clear in no time. |
