| The 6 Hour Canoe - easily manageable by a child. Very easy & quick to build. A lot of fun for expeditions, picnics, wildlife watching. More than twice the fun when the family build two! And nearly half the price per boat! I have taken these pictures from the book with the plan and building procedure in it. I'll put up some photos of canoes that customers have built, though I haven't got many because we work at quite a pace during the 4 days building, and I keep forgetting to take a picture break. A few years back I cooked up a project with Torbay Education Authority for six volunteer 16 year olds who were just leaving school with no job to go to. They built three 6 Hour Canoes, had paddling and safety training, and then took their boats on a 2-day expedition down the Dart, camping and cooking over an open fire. It was a great experience for all of us. I particularly treasure seeing the lads coming for the start of the first day, all mouth & uncertain swagger. During the building they slowly quietened & buckled down. When they roped their canoes into the pick-up they were walking taller. At the end of their expedition there was a tangible sense of enthusiasm. Only 8 days, not sustained enough permanently to change their self image. Nevertheless, a tremendously positive experience to set against their sea of negative ones. |
