OVERVIEW OF COURSES
Before you come on your Course, we discuss the pros & cons of different boats, and agree which design is exactly what you need.

When you come to the workshop, you build, with my help and tuition, the hull of your boat.  At the end of your course you take it home

That is completely different from most other courses.  They only give you a blackboard introduction, some hands on practice, and the boat you work on is rarely yours.

WHO CAN COME?
ANYONE.
Although woodworking experience can be useful, it is not necessary. Every person, man, woman, or child, on my Build-a-Boat Courses has succeeded in building their hull and had enormous fun & satisfaction doing it.
You can come alone. But much better, come with your wife or partner, child(ren), or fellow club members. It`s much more fun and quicker.

The price depends not on the number of people but on my time and the materials. (See Course Dates & Prices below)

HOW DOES A BUILD-A-BOAT COURSE WORK?
It`s like an activity holiday, really.

  • You come down to Devon and stay in a B&B, self catering, or caravan.
  • I have prepared everything you need to get started, including plans for the boat you want to build. We work together to build your hull, in my workshop.
  • On the last day we turn your hull over and ...you have a boat!      There is a joyful moment of congratulations all round, with a celebration glass of something good.
  • Then you take boat, plans, and all your new skills and confidence back home.

COURSE DATES & PRICES

  • Course dates are by arrangement.
  • Course length depends on your needs & the boat design.
  • Prices also depend on the above, but are independent of the number of people working on your boat. They include materials and no VAT is payable.

ACCOMMODATION
Totnes, with the South Hams and the River Dart, is a glorious holiday area. There are plenty of B&Bs and Farmhouses within easy reach of the workshop in Dartington.
When you book your course, I send you a Totnes Guide. You can then book accommodation at the price and in the place that suits you.

"For anyone with an interest in woodwork as well as in boats, the course is a goldmine. For me it was a course on better ways of doing things, with a planked up hull as a valuable bonus."
